When should I take out travel insurance?

Ideally, you should take out travel insurance on the day you buy it, so that it covers you as soon as possible in the event of an event preventing you from leaving. You are covered from the day you take out the policy, even if your trip is still a few weeks away. Your luggage will be covered as soon as you leave on your trip.
