Family travel insurance: protection for peaceful journeys

You know it: while traveling with your family creates unforgettable memories, it also involves particular responsibilities and requires suitable protection.

Family travel insurance allows you to fully enjoy your adventures, knowing that your loved ones are protected against unexpected events.

Choosing family travel insurance not only guarantees financial protection in case of problems, but also gives you the peace of mind you need to make the most of these precious family moments. Whether you face health issues, delays, or cancellations, everything is taken care of for the well-being of both adults and little ones!

Why take out family travel insurance?

Stay calm and protected, even in case of unexpected events

Traveling with children can put you in situations where protection is essential. Little ones are more sensitive to climate changes, new eating habits, and local germs, which must be considered before your departure. A simple stomach bug, a fall at an amusement park, or an ear infection at high altitude can turn a dream vacation into a source of stress if you are not properly covered.

Here are some situations that can be covered by our family travel insurance:

  • You can no longer go on vacation due to illness, an emergency, or an accident;
  • You must interrupt your trip and return early for medical reasons;
  • Your luggage did not arrive at your destination or was lost;
  • A family member falls ill during the trip and needs care on-site;
  • A medical repatriation becomes necessary from your destination.

Travel safely while reducing your expenses

Accidents and unexpected events, in Switzerland or abroad, can quickly become expensive. In fact, repatriation from any country often costs several thousand (or even tens of thousands) Swiss francs. Not to mention trip interruption fees, hospitalization costs, or repair costs in case of a car accident. For this reason, family travel insurance is essential.

Keep in mind: even if your basic insurance and accident coverage can cover a tiny part of what you will have to pay, the extra cost can be steep without the right plan.

Temporary or Annual Travel Insurance: Which Should You Choose for Your Family?

The choice between temporary and annual insurance depends on your travel habits, your plans, and your family situation. Here’s everything you need to know.

Annual Travel Insurance: The Solution for Traveling Families

Annual travel insurance is the ideal solution for those who travel with their family and plan at least two to three trips in Switzerland or abroad each year. This plan offers coverage throughout the year, starting at any time, ensuring peace of mind for all stays, vacations, and trips more than 30 km from home.

This option proves to be economically advantageous compared to temporary travel insurance, offering higher coverage amounts and exclusive services. With our annual Comfort plan, you benefit from travel concierge services and an extension for your pets. You can choose whether or not to renew this insurance when it expires. It also covers excursions within Switzerland, providing permanent protection for the whole family!

Temporary Travel Insurance: Perfect for Occasional Trips

If you only travel occasionally with your family or are unsure about committing to an annual plan, temporary travel insurance is the ideal option. It specifically covers the indicated trip with the specified dates, taking effect upon subscription.

Purchasing early offers the advantage of coverage for cancellations due to events occurring before departure. You can also take out temporary insurance for up to 180 consecutive days, which is ideal for long summer vacations or an exceptional trip. Once the trip is over, the temporary insurance policy ends, allowing you to subscribe again for future travels.

Who can be covered by family insurance?

Travel insurance can cover one or several people, depending on your needs.

If you are traveling as a family, include all members of your household, including your children and babies from birth. In this case, we recommend choosing annual insurance, which becomes very advantageous starting from two people living in the same household. Our family insurance allows you to group all household members under a single contract, simplifying administrative procedures while achieving substantial savings.

Traveling in a group? In that case, our temporary travel insurance can cover up to 10 people at once, even if they do not belong to the same family. This is a practical option that guarantees coverage for all group members, for vacations with friends or a school trip, for example.

Essential coverage of family insurance

1. Coverage of medical expenses abroad

You already know: when traveling with your family, your children’s health is an absolute priority. Our medical expense travel insurance covers medical consultations, hospitalizations, and necessary treatments up to CHF 250'000 with our Comfort plans. This protection extends to all family members, from the youngest to the oldest!

This way, you can focus on what truly matters without worrying about financial concerns.

2. Repatriation insurance from abroad

Medical repatriation is one of the most important benefits of family travel insurance. Contrary to popular belief, LAMal does not cover repatriation costs from abroad to Switzerland. These costs can reach several tens of thousands of francs, especially in the case of medical evacuation by air ambulance.

Europ Assistance, a pioneer in personal assistance for over 60 years, organizes and fully covers your medical repatriation. In case of foreign repatriation insurance, we also take care of:

  • The return of other insured family members;
  • The arrival of a loved one at your bedside in case of prolonged hospitalization;
  • Early return in case of hospitalization or death of a family member remaining in Switzerland;
  • Search and rescue costs if you get lost.

3. Trip Cancellation Insurance

Trip cancellation insurance is particularly valuable for families. Booking a vacation for several people represents a significant financial investment that can quickly reach several thousand francs between plane tickets, accommodation, and activities. And it would be a real shame to lose these amounts in case of an unexpected event!

Fortunately, our insurance covers cancellation costs up to CHF 50'000 (CHF 100'000 for annual plans) in the event of illness, accident, death, unforeseen pregnancy complications, hospitalization of a loved one, or health issues with your pet (Dogs & Cats extension included in our Comfort plans). This coverage applies from the day of subscription, protecting you against unforeseen events occurring between booking and departure.

In case of trip interruption, we cover the costs of early return for the whole family, unused hotel nights, as well as reserved but unused activities.

4. Baggage Insurance in Case of Loss, Theft, or Damage

Traveling as a family means you will prepare and transport numerous suitcases. From clothes for all ages to childcare equipment, toys, medications, sports gear, and your electronic devices... your peace of mind depends on well-packed and protected luggage! Because yes: the loss, theft, or damage of these items can not only be costly but also compromise the smooth running of your vacation.

Fortunately, our baggage insurance covers your personal belongings up to CHF 5'000 against theft, robbery, damage, and loss. If your luggage arrives at its destination with a significant delay (at least 4 hours), we also cover up to CHF 1'000 for your essential purchases.

Frequently Asked Questions About Family Travel Insurance

What is family travel insurance?

Family travel insurance is an insurance policy that covers all members of the same family during their trips. Unlike individual insurance, it groups parents and children under a single policy, offering complete protection for everyone at an advantageous rate. It generally includes trip cancellation, medical assistance, repatriation, healthcare abroad, and baggage protection.

Who is covered by Europ Assistance family insurance?

Our family insurance covers all people living under the same roof: parents (married or cohabiting), babies and children under 25, and depending on the plan, grandparents and other household members. Note that children remain covered even when traveling alone or with friends, as long as they are included in the family contract.

Is LAMal enough for family travel abroad?

No, LAMal and LAA provide limited coverage abroad. In the EU-EFTA area, LAMal covers emergency care according to local rates thanks to the European Health Insurance Card, but you will often have to pay local deductibles out of pocket. Most importantly, LAMal never covers medical repatriation.
Outside Europe, coverage is even more restrictive: reimbursement is capped at twice the Swiss rate for outpatient care and at 90% of the Swiss rate for hospitalization. In countries like the United States, Canada, Australia, or Japan, where medical costs are particularly high, this coverage is largely insufficient.
Your basic insurance and accident coverage will only cover a tiny portion of what you would have to pay in case of hospitalization or repatriation abroad. That’s why complementary travel insurance is essential for stress-free family travel.

Does travel insurance cover babies and newborns?

Yes, our insurance covers babies from birth. You can therefore travel with peace of mind with your newborns, knowing they will benefit from the same protection as other family members. Coverage includes emergency pediatric consultations, hospitalizations, and medical repatriation if necessary.

What exactly does medical repatriation cover?

Medical repatriation includes transportation from your location to an appropriate healthcare facility in Switzerland or near your home. Depending on your health condition, this transport may be by ambulance, train, scheduled flight with medical assistance, or specially chartered air ambulance. Europ Assistance covers all costs and coordinates the entire process.

Can I purchase family travel insurance the day before departure?

Yes, you can subscribe up to 1 day before departure. However, to fully benefit from the cancellation coverage, it is strongly recommended to subscribe as soon as you book your trip. Cancellation coverage takes effect immediately upon subscription, protecting you against unforeseen events occurring between booking and departure.

What cancellation reasons are covered by Europ Assistance?

Covered reasons include, according to Europ Assistance (Switzerland) General Conditions:

  • Accident, illness, or death affecting you or a close relative;
  • Medically certified pregnancy complications;
  • Sudden, acute, and unforeseeable worsening of a pre-existing condition;
  • Involuntary job loss after booking the trip;
  • Significant damage to your home, such as fire, water damage, or burglary;
  • With the Dogs & Cats extension, illness, accident, or death of your pet.

Coverage applies according to the current general conditions.

My child is going on a school trip—are they protected against unforeseen events?

Yes! If your child is included in your family insurance contract, they remain covered. This also applies when traveling alone, during school trips, or group adventures. Protection automatically applies to all their trips, whether accompanied by family or not!

How does 24/7 assistance work?

Our assistance center is available 24/7. In case of a medical emergency, our teams assess your situation, guide you to appropriate healthcare facilities, coordinate medical transportation if necessary, and can advance medical expenses. Our multilingual advisors support you every step of the way.

Does the insurance cover sports activities with children?

Yes, our insurance covers common family leisure activities such as skiing, hiking, cycling, swimming, amusement parks, etc. For more extreme sports, it is recommended to check the general conditions or contact our teams for confirmation.

What is the difference between single-trip and annual insurance?

Single-trip insurance covers one trip of a specified duration (up to 180 days). Annual insurance, on the other hand, covers all your trips for 365 days a year, regardless of their individual duration. Annual insurance becomes more advantageous starting from 2 trips per year.

How do I file a claim with Europ Assistance?

In case of a medical issue, contact our assistance immediately. For other claims (cancellation, baggage, etc.), you can file your claim online on our website or contact our customer service. Keep all supporting documents (invoices, medical certificates, police reports in case of theft, etc.): our teams will guide you through the process!

Does the insurance also cover trips within Switzerland?

Yes. With Europ Assistance annual travel insurance, your trips within Switzerland are covered: assistance (including mountain search and rescue) is included according to the general conditions, and some plans explicitly specify protection “in Switzerland and abroad.” However, it is recommended to check your specific policy to confirm that day trips are included in your coverage.
