Exploring Amsterdam with kids: what to see and do

Amsterdam is full of surprises – even for the youngest visitors! In this guide, we reveal the best places and activities for children. There’s plenty to choose from, and even some of the city’s most iconic landmarks offer great experiences for kids. The Bonjour Amsterdam team shares its top tips.

Step Aboard an 18th-Century Ship

We start with a lesser-known but much-loved attraction: visiting a full-scale replica of an 18th-century sailing ship! From the upper deck to the cargo hold, kids can explore every corner and imagine life as a sailor.

The ship is a faithful reconstruction of a Dutch East India Company vessel. You’ll find the captain’s cabin, food supplies (lots of cheese!), cannons, barrels, and sailors’ hammocks.

This immersive adventure is available daily at the Maritime Museum from 9 AM to 5 PM. Entry is free for children under 12, €8.50 for teens up to 17, and €18.50 for adults.

Canal Cruise – A Must-Do Experience

Exploring Amsterdam by boat is a great alternative to walking, especially with kids. A one-hour cruise offers beautiful views of the city’s gabled houses, often with an audio guide to explain the history.

In warmer months, you can rent a pedal boat and explore the canals at your own pace. These rides usually last 60 to 90 minutes and cost around €20 per boat.

The Royal Palace – Surprisingly Kid-Friendly

The Royal Palace on Dam Square is still used for official royal events, but it’s also a fascinating place for families. Originally built as a city hall in the 17th century, it’s full of intriguing details.

Kids are often captivated by the world maps engraved in the floor, mythical creatures, statues, and the old courtroom. A special children’s audio guide tells the story of a 17th-century boy solving a mysterious theft in the palace.

The palace is open almost daily from 10 AM to 5 PM. Entry is free for under-18s and €13.50 for adults. Plan for a 90-minute visit.

Jordaan and Vondelpark – Perfect for Family Time

You don’t need museums to keep kids entertained! The Jordaan district and Vondelpark are ideal for relaxed family outings.

Jordaan offers quiet streets, charming shops, playgrounds, and candy stores. Vondelpark is a large green space perfect for cycling, picnicking, and playing – with playgrounds, pedal boat rentals, and summer performances.

More Great Activities for Kids in Amsterdam

In addition to the highlights above, Amsterdam offers many child-focused attractions:

  • NEMO Science Museum: Hands-on learning and fun for all ages. Entry: ~€20, free for under-3s. Visit time: 2–3 hours.
