Travel tips for New York City: Discover the Big Apple!

New York City captivates with its superlatives: whether you enjoy the view from one of the tallest skyscrapers in the world, discover the history of one of the largest waves of immigration, admire the sunset from the Brooklyn Bridge – the longest suspension bridge in the world – or simply feed the squirrels in Central Park. A trip to this impressive city guarantees unforgettable experiences!

In this article, you will discover:

  • What to do when it rains in New York
  • How to prepare your trip
  • The best time to visit New York
  • Where to stay and how to get around the city

New York is a multicultural city. More than twelve million immigrants arrived there by ship until the mid-20th century. The influences of numerous cultures can be felt everywhere: in gastronomy, architecture, and language. The diversity of activities and experiences seems endless: Times Square, which is particularly spectacular at night, the Statue of Liberty, whose platform at 102 meters offers a unique view of Manhattan, the Empire State Building, one of the tallest buildings in the world, and Central Park, the city’s “green lung,” perfect for relaxing after a day full of discoveries.

The best attractions to discover in New York

Visit the Statue of Liberty

A highlight in the city that never sleeps is a cruise aboard a sailboat: silently gliding across the water, you can admire Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the skyline in complete tranquility. A bar on board ensures culinary delights. This excursion is especially magical in the evening when the city lights come on and the sun sets over the sea.

Stroll through High Line Park

The High Line is a former freight railway line, 2.6 kilometers long and located 7.5 meters above the ground in western Manhattan. It was transformed into a park, High Line Park, between 2006 and 2023. It runs through the Meatpacking District and Chelsea neighborhoods. A walk among diverse vegetation (especially in spring and summer) offers a superb view of Manhattan and the Hudson River.

Admire the panoramic view of New York

In New York, the most beautiful views are enjoyed from above – not to be missed! Several observation decks offer exceptional panoramas of the city, for example:

  • Summit at One Vanderbilt: located in Midtown Manhattan, it rises to 305 meters.
  • Empire State Building: one of the city’s most famous buildings.
  • Edge New York: located in Hudson Yards, it reaches 345 meters.
  • Top of the Rock: at Rockefeller Plaza, with a 360-degree view.
  • One World Observatory: the platform of One World Trade Center, with views of the Statue of Liberty and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Take a break in Central Park

The famous urban park is a green oasis in the heart of the city, ideal for taking a break during your visit. It’s perfect for walking, cycling, or having a picnic.

There are five artificial waterfalls to discover. Vast lawns (“The Great Lawn”) provide space for many sports. And the jogging track around the reservoir allows you to exercise over about 2.4 kilometers.

Central Park is ideal in every season: in summer, you can attend free concerts and outdoor film screenings; in winter, an ice rink adds to the Christmas magic in New York. In the “Shakespeare Garden,” you can admire numerous plants mentioned in Shakespeare’s works.

At the center of the park is one of the most famous fountains in the world: Bethesda Fountain, featured in many films.

Attend a Broadway show

Broadway is one of New York’s most popular attractions. Culture lovers will find in the legendary theater district of Midtown Manhattan not only classic plays and musicals but also brand-new productions.

With theater, singing, and dancing, popular shows shine near Times Square, such as Moulin Rouge and Wicked, as well as Disney favorites like Aladdin and The Lion King.

For “Off-Broadway,” a little away from the main Broadway area, you’ll find venues for smaller productions (fewer than 500 seats).

In total, about 40 theaters offer magical evenings and exceptional entertainment.

Tip: Buy your Broadway tickets online in advance to secure the best seats while saving time and money. Lines at the box office can be very long.

Not a theater fan? Why not attend the recording of a TV show? In New York, several famous Late Night Shows are filmed, such as The Daily Show. Tickets are free, but you need a bit of luck to get them: they are often distributed by lottery.

Be dazzled at Times Square

Times Square is one of the most famous squares in the world and a must-see attraction in New York. It attracts several million visitors every year. That’s why it’s nicknamed “Crossroads of the World.”
It owes its name to the New York Times newspaper and is now largely a pedestrian zone. You’ll find many restaurants and shops there. At Times Square, it’s not uncommon to meet people in costume: for a few dollars, you can take a photo with them – the perfect travel souvenir.

Under the light of the iconic giant billboards, you’ll understand why New York is called “the city that never sleeps.” These huge screens have a unique charm and make the square unforgettable.

An unusual tip: celebrate your birthday in New York or plan a romantic marriage proposal?

You can book a spot on a billboard and display a video or photo for 15 seconds. For 24 hours, this message will be shown every hour – a truly unique idea.

Another highlight is Times Square on New Year’s Eve. More than a million people attend the famous “Ball Drop”: one minute before the new year, a ball (3.7 meters in diameter) descends along a 43-meter pole from the “One Times Square” building. Plus, there are performances by famous artists and a gigantic fireworks display.

Cross the Brooklyn Bridge

This steel cable suspension bridge, 1.8 kilometers long, is impressive. For a long time, it was the only link between Brooklyn and Manhattan. You can cross it on foot, by bike, or by car. On foot, you’ll best enjoy the view and the calm. Allow at least 45 minutes for the crossing. Renting a bike is fun too – but since you have to ride with cars, you’ll miss much of the skyline.

To admire the view of the bridge itself, you can also visit Brooklyn Bridge Park. In good weather, it’s an ideal spot for a picnic and a break from Manhattan’s hustle and bustle.

Tip: If you’re already exhausted from sightseeing, you can simply take the ferry. With NYC Ferry, you’ll cross the river in a few minutes while enjoying a superb view during the ride.

For rainy days: New York City museums

When it rains, take the opportunity to discover New York’s famous museums. The city offers an impressive concentration of world-renowned museums – among them the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET), the Guggenheim Museum, and the American Museum of Natural History.

Compared to European museums, New York institutions often reflect the city’s fast pace, with a more dynamic atmosphere.

Good to know: photography, often even with flash, is allowed in most museums – a practice uncommon in Europe.

Prepare your trip to New York: what you need to know before you go

A trip to the United States always requires a bit more preparation than a trip within Europe.

That’s why good organization is the key to an unforgettable experience in the Big Apple.

To make sure you’re perfectly prepared, we’ve summarized the essential information here – from the best time to visit to entry requirements.

The best time for your trip to New York

Entry to the United States: ESTA and passport

Entry to the United States: important rules

To enter the United States, strict rules apply. With an Austrian passport, you generally do not need a visa for a tourist stay of up to 90 days. However, keep the following in mind:

  • Biometric passport: your passport must be biometric and valid for at least 6 more months.
  • ESTA authorization: you must apply online for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA). For all information on the steps to take, see our article Getting an ESTA for the USA: how to do it?

Accommodation: where to stay in New York?

In New York, vacation rentals and Airbnb are strictly regulated. It’s therefore better to stay in a hotel. Plan for a high budget for accommodation, especially in peak season.

The choice of neighborhood is essential for your New York experience:

  • Midtown Manhattan: ideal for a first visit. You’ll be close to major attractions like Times Square, the Empire State Building, and Broadway.
  • Lower Manhattan (SoHo, Greenwich Village): perfect for those who love charming streets, boutiques, and lively nightlife.
  • Brooklyn (Williamsburg, Dumbo): offers a more relaxed atmosphere, trendy cafés, and stunning views of Manhattan’s skyline. Often, the value for money is better here.
  • Queens (Long Island City): a booming neighborhood with many modern hotels and excellent fast connections to Manhattan.

Getting around the metropolis: overview of transportation options

As in most big cities, a car is not the best choice. There are taxis and Uber, but most of the time, the subway or walking is faster. Here are the options in New York:

  • Subway: the public transport network is very extensive. The subway is the fastest and most efficient way – available 24/7. Payment is simple: contactless with a bank card, smartphone, or smartwatch directly at the turnstile (OMNY system).
  • On foot: the best way to discover the city. Plan routes through different neighborhoods to explore hidden corners.
  • Bus: a good alternative to see the city from the surface. Payment via the OMNY system as well.
  • NYC Ferry: ferries offer fantastic views of the skyline and connect Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx.
  • Citi Bike: the official bike-sharing system, ideal for rides in Central Park or along the Hudson River.

Important: don’t forget travel insurance!

To make your trip to New York unforgettable and worry-free, prepare well.

Medical care in the United States is very expensive. If you get sick or have an accident during your stay, without international health insurance, you could have to pay very high amounts. Repatriation in case of a medical emergency can also be very costly without coverage.

At Europ Assistance Switzerland, our Comfort option covers up to CHF 250'000 with the guarantee of medical expenses abroad.

Cancellation and trip interruption insurance covers cancellation fees or reimburses unused services as well as additional costs for early return, for example in case of illness or family emergency.

At Europ Assistance Switzerland, we cover up to CHF 100'000 in case of trip cancellation.

Finally, baggage insurance is recommended: in case of theft or damage, it compensates you. With our Comfort option, you don’t have to worry about risks during your stay in New York – you can simply enjoy your vacation.
