Airline luggage: what is the maximum weight?

When we go on a trip, we often take some luggage with us. These are subject to size and weight criteria that vary from airline to airline. Here are a few tips to help you fly with peace of mind and avoid problems at the airport.

What is the weight limit for checked baggage?

Depending on the airline, the maximum weight of checked baggage may vary. In economy class, the maximum weight allowed is often around 20 kilos. However, if you're flying low-cost, this limit can be reduced to between 15 and 18 kg. Nowadays, some low-cost airlines don't hesitate to charge you for all checked baggage. In 1st class or business class, this limit is always higher, with a minimum of 30 kg.

What happens if your hold baggage exceeds the maximum weight allowed?

While some airlines are tolerant and allow extra kilos on take-off, it's best not to count on it all the same. For over-ambitious passengers, the bill can be quite steep, as excess baggage can cost up to CHF 10 per extra kilo, depending on the flight taken and the class chosen...If you take an extra suitcase, it can also be very expensive, with a lump sum of up to CHF 100. To travel with heavier suitcases, having an airline frequent flyer card can sometimes help, whatever class you take.

What are the rules for cabin baggage?

All passengers (including infants) are allowed to take their carry-on baggage with them. In terms of size, baggage must generally not exceed 55 x 35 x 25 cm, and the weight limit is around 5 kg.

Special equipment: oversized luggage

If you want to take your surfboard, fishing rod or other bulky equipment with you on your trip, you should be aware that airlines apply specific rules and prices. Because of their size and weight, these items are considered special baggage items. It's essential to find out before you take your plane whether they're allowed to travel, and under what conditions, to make sure you don't have to leave anything behind at the airport!

In case of problems with your luggage
