Fishing trips: advice for a successful and memorable fishing holiday

Would you like to discover a new place to fish? To come face to face with species of fish you've never had the chance to catch before? Would you like to go on a sea fishing trip when you're used to the peace and quiet of Swiss lakes?

Organizing a fishing trip is an event that needs to be prepared in advance so that you can make the most of your stay and create some magnificent memories.

How do you organise a fishing trip?

The first option is to organise everything yourself by booking your transport and accommodation online. In addition to these incompressible costs, you'll need to budget for food, as well as equipment if you don't bring your own. If this fishing trip takes you out of your comfort zone, because you want to try out new fishing techniques, or you're still a novice, it's best to contact a tour operator who knows the sport well. This professional organisation will be able to give you the best advice, particularly when it comes to choosing your destination according to your budget and expectations. On site, hiring the skills of a specialist, experienced guide is highly recommended, especially for a sea fishing trip if you've never done it before or if you're unfamiliar with the techniques involved.

Before setting off on your fishing trip, there are several things to check. Depending on your destination, make sure your vaccinations are up to date and that your passport and visa are still valid. What's more, some countries require a fishing licence, while others do not. Make sure you have all the information you need before you leave on your trip. You should also find out what the weather is likely to be like during your stay, so that you can pack appropriate clothing. This avoids overloading your suitcase or, conversely, not having what you need and having to buy on the spot. Don't forget a first-aid kit for minor injuries and a copy of your prescriptions if you're undergoing medical treatment.

What destinations should you choose for a fishing trip abroad?

Not sure where to go? Here are a few ideas for destinations outside Switzerland.
For sea fishing, one of the favourite destinations for anglers is Costa Rica. Its waters are teeming with fish not found in Switzerland, such as roosterfish and barracuda. Closer to home, Iceland is also an excellent choice for a sea-fishing holiday for those who like to tease sea bass or cod. In Spain, you can catch tuna, sea bream and swordfish.
If you want to try your hand at big-game fishing while staying on the European continent, head for a country bordering the Baltic Sea, such as Germany, Sweden or Finland. Biodiversity is largely preserved there, and you'll meet plenty of fishing enthusiasts.

For angling, try Poland. Its many lakes are teeming with pike, trout and sturgeon.

To take or not to take your own equipment on a fishing trip?

As a seasoned angler, you'll probably be tempted to take your own fishing tackle with you on your trip. If you're going by car and it's big enough to hold everything, that's perfectly feasible. But if your fishing trip requires you to travel by plane, you will almost certainly have to pay additional costs, which can be substantial. This is an expense not to be overlooked when organising your fishing trip. Don't hesitate to contact your airline to find out the exact amount. It's often cheaper to hire fishing tackle locally than to take it with you. Make your own calculations!
What's more, depending on the fish you'll be fishing for, the equipment you need may be different from what you're used to. It would be a shame to burden yourself with a rod, reel, lures and other equipment that you won't need because it's not suitable. Once again, it's worth finding out what you need to know before you set off.

Is travel insurance essential for a sea fishing holiday?

Travel insurance for a sea-fishing holiday is highly recommended. By covering all eventualities, travel insurance allows you to enjoy your favourite pastime with complete peace of mind. If your fishing trip is cancelled or interrupted, if your equipment is lost, or if you fall ill on the spot, your expenses will be covered?
